Gallery Mess Café is like The Saatchi Gallery located in the Duke of York’s majestic old headquarters on King’s Road in the heart of London. The location is beyond compare, and much history is tied to the building. The Café is presumably situated in the same place as the mess where the Duke’s soldiers were fed – hence the name Gallery “Mess” Café.

Today, the renowned food company Rhubarb is in charge of the cooking, and word has it that the entire menu has been tasted by Nigella Lawson, one of England’s most popular chefs, who is also married to Charles Saatchi. One can get everything from light lunches to traditional afternoon tea and delicate cocktails at Gallery Mess Café where Georgian architecture meets designer furniture from Vitra and modern art. The works of art on display in the café are chosen from Saatchi Online – a free forum for artists – and if you fall for a piece of work, you can buy it.

As a beautiful foundation for the food and art, Gallery Mess Café has chosen two different oak floors: Dinesen HeartOak and Dinesen Oak. The planks are made from oak trees that are between 150 and 200 years old and contribute with their own story to the famous address on King’s Road.

When oak trees through time live through hard winters, dry summers, storm and wind, it will leave traces. Traces which do not appear before the tree is sawn-up and thus reveals it inner secrets – in form of cracks for example. Actually, one can almost read the entire history of a tree from its middle, and when it comes to Dinesen HeartOak, history is a virtue. The sawn wood from the heart of the oak tree is carefully prepared to ensure that the planks keep an unspoiled and strong expression. Natural cracks are retained and locked by elegant dovetail joints of oak, and the planks are up to 0.5 metres wide. Dinesen HeartOak can be experienced in the Private Dining Room on the 1st floor.

The floor in the café and bar at Gallery Mess Café also has a unique expression as it is made of particularly wide planks. This oak floor from Dinesen has few knots, a natural colour variation and a calm structure which fit the raw brick walls and beautiful arches perfectly.
